BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — An investigation is under way after a worker was killed in an accident at a southern Montana precious metals mine, but few details are being released.
The accident happened at Stillwater Mining Co.'s operation near Nye on Monday afternoon, and representatives from the Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
A company news release confirmed the death Monday night but did not provide any other details. The employee's name has not been released pending notification of the family.
The mine was evacuated Oct. 19 after equipment used to move ore and waste started smoking. There were no reports of fire and no one was injured.
Stillwater is the only producer of platinum and palladium in the country.
