SME Education Foundation Awards Six Students $110,000 in Family and Director Scholarships
The SME Education Foundation has awarded Family and Director Scholarships to six future manufacturing engineers pursuing careers in electrical, industrial, mechanical, medical, and nuclear manufacturing engineering.
DEARBORN, Mich., June 14, 2010 — Incredible feats of architecture, acclaimed and enjoyed by all, are made possible because of the great unseen foundations they sit upon. Conversely, the SME Education Foundation  is building on what it has accomplished in 30 years  and making unprecedented progress as the recognized catalyst for the advancement of manufacturing engineering education. SME Education Foundation Family Scholarships and Charles Chambers Director Scholarships  totaling $110,000 have been awarded to six future manufacturing engineers.
The SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship Award recipients include: Melissa (Melly) J. Meyer, Hudson, Wis., recipient of a $70,000, four-year SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship, will pursue a degree in Nuclear Engineering / Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wis.
John F. Koehler, Rolling Meadows, Ill., recipient of a $10,000, one-year SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship, will pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Ill.
Elmer A. Prenzlow, Thiensville, Wis., recipient of a $10,000, one-year SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship, will pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering / Technology at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Milwaukee, Wis.
Says Melly, "Concerned about our nation's energy future, I am especially interested in the prospects of nuclear power and how to design and produce technology that makes this industry more safe and reliable. As an incoming freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I can't wait to gain the skills and knowledge I need to become a contributing member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. With a degree in nuclear engineering, I plan to produce cutting-edge equipment for much needed, reliable energy alternatives. I am excited to seek opportunities in this challenging and dynamic field, and the SME Education Foundation is helping to make this possible."
The SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship was created in 1999 under the direction of former SME Education Foundation board president, Raymond G. Adams, PE. "We need to secure manufacturing as an industry in this country," says Adams. "Students who have worked hard to maintain their GPA and have demonstrated their engineering career potential deserve being supported by our Family Scholarship program. In celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year, the SME Education Foundation has much to celebrate."
Charles Chambers Directors Scholarship Award recipients include: Jesse J. Pischlar, Sudbury, Ontario, recipient of a $10,000, one-year award to continue his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, Wis. where he is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Manufacturing Engineering for a career in medical manufacturing.
Alexandria Moseley, Newberg, Ore., recipient of a $5,000, one-year award allowing her to continue her studies and graduate from Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore. summa cum-laude with Bachelor's degrees in both Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.
Andrew J. Rowe, Kalamazoo, Mich., recipient of a $5,000, one year-award allowing him to finalize his studies at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., where is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Manufacturing Engineering.
Since 1998, the Foundation has provided over $4.0 million dollars in financial aid through its various scholarship programs. This year, 140 students have received SME Education Foundation scholarships. These have included graduating high school seniors, current undergraduates and masters or doctoral degree students pursuing degrees in manufacturing and related fields at two-year and four-year colleges. About the Charles Chambers Directors Scholarship:Scholarship applicants must be full-time graduates enrolled in a manufacturing or related degree program in the United States or Canada. Preference is given to students who demonstrate leadership skills in a community, academic, or professional environment. Scholarship applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours and be seeking a career in manufacturing. Scholarship applicants must possess an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship can only be used as a credit toward tuition, books, or fees.
About the SME Education Foundation Family Scholarship:The SME Education Foundation seeks to support the children and grandchildren of SME members, and to encourage their pursuit of careers in manufacturing engineering and technology. This highly competitive scholarship, made possible by the E. Wayne Kay Scholarship Fund, is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and an interest in manufacturing engineering or a related technology. GPA required (minimum overall): 3.0. Criteria: Applicants must be a child or grandchild of a SME member, either a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student with no more than 30 credit hours, and have a minimum SAT score of 1000, and/or ACT score of 21.
