Protesters Gather Against Proposed Chicken Processing Plant
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Cumberland County Commissioners now know that dozens of their constituents oppose a proposed $113 million chicken processing plant in the area.
The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1w4BfVU ) that more than 100 people turned out Monday night and one man gave the commissioners a petition he said contained 1,000 signatures opposed to the plant.
Sanderson Farms has not formally committed to build the plant proposed for an industrial park east of Interstate 95. The company says the plant would create about 1,000 jobs.
Commission Chairwoman Jeanette Council says there will be a public hearing before the commission considers the issue.
Earlier this month about 350 people attended a hearing in Fayetteville on the issue.
