SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A chemical company is helping clean up a Spartanburg neighborhood even as it fights claims in court that it polluted the ground and water, causing illnesses and dropping property values.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg ( ) reports that Hoechst Celanese began its work to clean up chloroform from the neighborhood last week. The company is injecting other chemicals into the ground to reduce the toxicity of the chloroform.

Hoechst Celanese's cleanup efforts are happening at the same time the company is asking a court to throw out a lawsuit over the pollution. The company says the neighbors suing have not proven the pollution got into their wells.

A judge is considering the company's request.
