Romanian PM: No Support for Gold Mine

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania's prime minister says Parliament will not support a Canadian gold mine that has drawn mass protests this week over the use of cyanide in the extraction process.

Victor Ponta said Monday he would look for other ways to find jobs in the deprived area where Canadian company Gabriel Resources has been trying to get permits to build what would have been the biggest gold mine in Europe.

Thousands have protested this week against the proposed mine. The leader of two main parties said Monday they opposed the project, which Parliament is still due to vote on.

Supporters say the mine would bring foreign investment and jobs, but opponents say it would be too big an environmental risk.
