NM Company Proposes Gold Mine in Ortiz Mountains
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — An Albuquerque-based company wants to operate a new gold mine in the Ortiz Mountains south of Santa Fe and northeast of Albuquerque.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that Santa Fe Gold Corp. says it would extract minerals without using chemical leaching.
Two other companies last mined gold in the Ortiz Mountains three decades ago.
They used open-pit mining and cyanide heap-leaching, resulting in a lawsuit by Madrid residents over contamination from that mine.
A brochure mailed residents says Santa Fe Gold would use processes that are environmentally friendly.
