BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil's Norte Energia, the consortium that won the auction to build the Belo Monte power dam, signed a 13.8 billion reais ($8.3 billion) contract with a consortium of construction firms, the company said in a statement on Friday.

The companies which will build the hydroelectric dam include Camargo Correa, Norberto Odebrecht, OAS, Queiroz Galvao, Contern, Galvao Engenharia, Serveng-Civilsan, Cetenco and J.Malucelli.

Last month, Brazil's environment agency approved the start-up of the Belo Monte dam, a controversial $17 billion project in the Amazon that has drawn criticism from native Indians and conservationists.
