Hydropower Plant Explosion Kills Two

Wed, 05/12/2010 - 7:14am

MOSCOW (AP) — Emergency officials say two people died and ten were wounded in a fire that broke out after an explosion at a hydropower plant in central Russia.

Regional emergency official Pyotr Krivulich said the blast occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Lower Kama hydropower station in the Tatarstan region some 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) east of Moscow.

He did not specify the nature of the explosion at the 31-year-old plant on the Kama river.

Last August, 69 people died after an explosion at the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant, Russia's largest.

Crumbling infrastructure and careless management have hampered Russia's development after decades of communism.
