EPA Recommends Capping Part Of Metachem Site

DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency is recommending paving over the most contaminated section of the abandoned Metachem Products chemical plant near Delaware City.

Capping the section, the agency's preferred option, would cost $12 million to $19 million. It would permanently cover untreated soils deeply soaked with toxic chemicals.

More comprehensive cleanup schemes under consideration for the 22.8-acre plant area carried price tags of up to $100 million.

Walls have already been sunk into the ground on three sides of the area in other cleanup and containment projects that cost about $70 million.

The EPA plans to take written public comments through Aug. 14. A public meeting is scheduled for July 28 at the Delaware City Fire Hall.
