CSX Transportation, Jacksonville, FL, has launched an online Carbon Calculator to focus on the environmental benefits of rail transport. The user-friendly tool calculates carbon dioxide emissions savings of specific rail shipments, providing comparative data among transportation choices. Accessed through the company’s website, www.csx.com, it prompts users to enter shipment weight and miles shipped and then returns the estimated carbon dioxide savings of shipping by rail. “Rail is the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient land transportation option,” said Clarence Gooden, CSX executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “This tool enables our customers and others to better understand the difference they can make — on a shipment by shipment basis — by choosing rail.” The EPA estimates that shifting 10 percent of long-haul freight from the highway to rail would reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 12 million tons. CSX is a member of the EPA’s Climate Leaders program and a charter member of the EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership.
