Coal Residue Vaults Found In Upper Peninsula

Two concrete vaults used to store tar residue and other impurities from a manufactured gas plant more than 100 years ago were recently found buried underground just north of the Shiras Steam Plant in south Marquette.

BP and its traders routinely manipulated prices to overcharge California as much as $300 million when it sold natural gas to the state, California and a fired BP employee allege. The BP employee, who had helped administer $2 billion in exclusive gas contracts with California, filed the case as a whistleblower.

Cause Of Leak That Killed Four Plant Workers Still Unknown

DuPont officials said it's still not clear what caused a toxic chemical to leak from a valve at a suburban Houston plant, killing four workers and injuring a fifth. The workers were exposed early Saturday while responding to the leak that started around 4 a.m.

Fireweed Farms sold about 300 pounds of pot to state-licensed processors and retailers. Bidding took place under a black tent fronted by tall heaters, and the event was monitored by at least two representatives of the Washington Liquor Control Board. Bidders could smell plastic bags before offering a bid, but consumption was forbidden.

Halliburton is buying rival oilfield services company Baker Hughes in a cash-and-stock deal worth $34.6 billion. The deal comes just days after talks had stalled and Halliburton prepared to go hostile with its takeover bid. The combined company would generate slightly larger revenue than Schlumberger Ltd., the world's biggest oil services company.

Judge Sticks To BP Gross Negligence Ruling

A federal judge in New Orleans is sticking to his ruling that said BP's conduct in the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil rig disaster amounted to "gross negligence." It could mean close to $18 billion in federal penalties for the oil giant.

Freedom Industries' Remediation Efforts May Be Lightened

The new agreement leaves that option on the table, but also allows Freedom to apply for the Land Restoration Voluntary Remediation Program. During bankruptcy proceedings company officials have said this program would be less expensive.

Don Blankenship has become the highest-ranking coal official to face federal charges in the nation's deadliest mine disaster in 40 years. A federal grand jury indicted the former Massey Energy CEO on numerous counts of conspiracy stemming from the April 2010 explosion that killed 29 men at the Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia.
